VPN speed and router setup: what to check first

Putting a VPN on a router can simplify coverage for devices without their own VPN apps. It also changes a shared part of your network. Start by checking compatibility and measuring performance on one device before making the router your default route.

Compare like with like

Run a baseline test without the VPN and a second test with it, using the same device and a similar time. Compare upload speed as well as download speed if you send large files. Record latency and test a real task, such as a video call, alongside a speed test.

Consider the route

A VPN adds a server to the connection path. Server distance, load, network routing and encryption overhead can affect performance. Cloudflare’s explanation of VPN speed notes that longer routes can increase latency. A nearby server is a sensible first test, not a promise of the best result on every network.

Verify router client support

The router needs VPN client support compatible with the provider. Proton’s router guide identifies OpenVPN or WireGuard client support as a requirement. A router offering only a VPN server feature is not necessarily suitable for connecting your home traffic to a commercial provider.

Understand the coverage boundary

A router VPN protects traffic through its tunnel from the router to the VPN endpoint. It does not replace Wi-Fi security between devices and the router. Devices using mobile data, a different network or an excluded route are outside that path.

Plan for disruption

Save the current settings, read the exact router guide and keep a way to reverse the change. Check printer access, streaming, account sign-in and calls after setup. If the router struggles with throughput or recovery, a device app may be a simpler fit. Choose based on measured results rather than assuming wider coverage always improves the experience.
